WHAT IS
Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disability caused by social, behavioral and communication challenges. People diagnosed with ASD communicate, interact, learn and behave differently from their peers and have abilities that range from gifted to severely challenged. One or more of the following symptoms may appear in the first two years of life:
Common signs of Autism:
- Aggressive behaviors
- Cognitive impairments
- Delayed Speech
- Echolalia (repetition of words or phrases)
- Hypersensitivity to sounds, lights, textures
- Inability to use gestures
- Lack of eye contact
- Lack of functional play skill
- Lack of social skills
- Loss of previously acquired speech
- Low safety or danger awareness
- Motor skill deficits
- Obsessive interests
- Picky eating habits
- Repetitive behaviors
- Self-injurious behaviors
- Temper tantrums
- Trouble with transitions
- Unresponsive to name
- Unusual sleeping habits
